Stained glass has often been described as ' the poor man's Bible' or ' the picture-book of the Church' because it was an effective way of presenting Bible stories in the days when relatively few people could read and when books were expensive, rare objects. In medieval times many churches had 'Jesse Windows' (or in some cases wall paintings) depicting the ancestry of Jesus, so called because Jesse, a Bethlehemite, was the father of King David and the ancestor of the royal line of Judah. At St Matthew's instead of one large window showing this family tree, some of the ancestors of Jesus are shown in a series of twenty windows on the south side of the clerestory, entitled 'The Stem of Jesse'.
