Lightcliffe Guild of Bell Ringers |

|
A small, but dedicated, band of people of all ages who meet to learn and ring the bells for Sunday Service. Practice night is Tuesday from 7.45 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday Service ringing is from 9.15 a.m. until 9.55 a.m.
As with most church bell ringing groups we always require more recruits to ensure that the Ancient Art of Church Bell Ringing will continue to be heard for many years to come. Our aim is to enjoy what we do whilst maintaining our prime objective, that being, to inform the people of Lightcliffe of God's presence. Our 8 bells were cast in 1970 by John Taylor of Loughborough with a tenor (or heaviest bell) of just over 4 cwt (220 kg) and are amongst one of the lightest rings of bells in the country. These bells replaced a much heavier set with the tenor weighing in at around 191/2 cwt (970 kg) which were too heavy for the tower.
The view from the top of the tower (80 ft or 38m) is amazing. From there you can see most of the Parish. The furthest landmark that can be seen is that of Emley Moor mast some 10 miles (16 km) to the south east. Along with the practice session on Tuesday evening and Sunday Service ringing we also ring for many weddings during the year and the occasional Quarter Peal (around 45 minutes of ringing) and Peal (around 3hours of ringing).
If you wish to learn more about the Bells and the Ringing at Lightcliffe please contact the Ringing Master , Peter Kirby, who will be more than happy to assist. Alternatively, please come up the tower on a Tuesday evening to see us in action. |
